Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, just a cartoon deer on the internet with a background in chemistry and a hyperfixation on skin. This is not medical advice.

TLDR: use an oil-based cleanser or micellar water.

So I’m not big on makeup - not a fan of the way foundation looks, never got the hang of applying eye shadow, yadda yadda. Realistically, one of the biggest reasons I take such good care of my skin is so I don’t have to waste time putting on makeup. I understand that not everyone has the same preferences as me, and that’s fine, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t still try to help you optimize the way you treat your skin. So today, this one’s for the ladies - we’re talking about makeup wipes!

Check out this ingredient list:

Makeup Remover Facial Cleansing Towelettes | Neutrogena®

Y’all know I’m not one to fear monger about chemicals, but this formulation is really just a bunch of harsh, dehydrating ingredients that aren’t even going to clean your skin particularly well. Worse, you’re pulling and tugging at your face with harsh cloth, and the cumulative effect over years will promote the formation of wrinkles. In my opinion, a better option would be an oil-based cleanser or micellar water. Best practice would be to forgo the cotton rounds for application with clean hands and subsequently rinsing off with water. For drier skin, I’d opt for an oil-based cleanser, and for oiler skin, I’d opt for micellar water. Depending on the amount of makeup applied or if you’re acne-prone, you may also want to follow up with a regular gentle cleanser. Vanicream is my preference.

Aaaaand don’t forget - you’ll want to replenish your skin afterwards with lipids by applying a moisturizer! Worry about prematurely damaging your skin with makeup wipes won’t matter much if you’re not keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized.

That’s all for now! Happy skincare!
