That said, peptides are worth talking about.

They’re one of those categories that used to live in the background of anti-aging skincare because they’re quiet, understated, and often misunderstood.

They’re not as dramatic as a prescription retinoid or as flashy as a new laser treatment, but they work.

Especially when used consistently and layered into a routine that already includes things like vitamin C, retinoids, and red light therapy.

In this article, I’ll break down what peptides actually are, what they do, the different types used in skincare, and how I personally use them.

Yes, we’ll get into copper peptides too, because the internet refuses to stop asking about them.

What Are Peptides, and What Do They Actually Do?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids.

If you want the technical explanation, they’re basically the building blocks of proteins like collagen, elastin, and keratin.

In skincare, they’re used because they can signal to the skin to do something helpful.

That might mean producing more collagen, calming inflammation, or improving your skin barrier.

Not all peptides do the same thing. Some are messengers that tell your skin to regenerate.

Others help transport minerals. Some are there to hydrate and support your barrier.

Now, what they don’t do is work overnight or replace the fundamentals. Peptides aren’t a miracle.

They’re just a smart addition to a routine that’s already doing the heavy lifting.

Most of the benefit comes from consistent use.

They don’t remodel your face (I’m saying don’t fall for those exaggerated pics on Instagram), but they can help maintain firmness, fight signs of aging, and improve texture, as well as support the work that ingredients like tretinoin or vitamin C are already doing.

Peptides vs. Other Anti-Aging Ingredients

Peptides are great, but they’re not the foundation of an anti-aging routine.

That’s still going to be things like retinoids, antioxidants, and a consistent barrier-supporting routine.

Peptides are the bonus step. In my view, they’re supportive, not central. They work well when your skin is already doing a lot.

If you’re using tretinoin or exfoliating acids, peptides can help bring in hydration, calm your skin, and reduce irritation.

They’re also helpful when your barrier needs more support or when your skin’s just feeling tired from too many actives.

Unlike retinoids or vitamin C, most peptides don’t increase cell turnover or act as antioxidants.

They work differently. Many of them are signaling molecules.

That means they tell your skin what to do, instead of doing it directly.

The result can be firmer, smoother skin, but it won’t happen in a week, and it’s not necessarily going to replace a prescription retinoid.

They work synergistically with retinoids though, and I’m all for including both in your routine.

If you’re already using the basics, peptides make sense.

If you’re trying to use them instead of the basics, I think you might be disappointed (though everyone’s skin is different!)

Different Types of Peptides in Skincare

Not all peptides do the same thing.

Skincare marketing tends to treat them like a single category, but there are a few different types that show up in formulas.

Understanding what kind you’re using can help you figure out whether a product is actually doing something or just calling itself “peptide-powered” for the label.

Here are some of the biggest categories:

• Signal peptides are the ones that get talked about the most. These help encourage collagen and elastin production by sending messages to your skin. A lot of anti-aging products use this category. Ingredients like Matrixyl (palmitoyl pentapeptide-4) or palmitoyl tripeptide-1 fall into this group.

• Carrier peptides help deliver trace minerals like copper to your skin, which can assist with repair and regeneration. The most well-known here is GHK-Cu, also known as copper peptides. We’ll get into those in more detail later since they deserve their own section.

• Neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides are sometimes referred to as “Botox in a bottle,” which is a stretch, but they’re still interesting. These peptides are meant to relax facial tension slightly by limiting the release of certain neurotransmitters. Argireline is probably the most famous example. The effects are subtle, and I wouldn’t expect miracles (sorry!)

• Enzyme-inhibiting peptides help reduce the breakdown of collagen and other structural proteins in the skin. These aren’t as common, but they do show up in some formulas aimed at improving firmness or elasticity.

Important note: peptides also depend on how they’re formulated and delivered. A good formula makes a difference, and this is a good category to splurge on. Good brands I like include Mirror Skin and NIOD.

Okay, But What About Copper Peptides?

Copper peptides have been having a moment online.

If you spend any time in skincare forums or on TikTok, you’ve probably seen people talking about how they’re “the next retinol” or the “future of anti-aging.”

I’ve written about them before, and I still stand by what I said: they’re not a scam, but they’re also not magic.

They’re just exactly what they say they are: copper peptides.

GHK-Cu, the copper peptide used in most skincare products, has been studied for wound healing, skin regeneration, and even hair growth.

It shows promise.

But most of those studies were done in very specific contexts, and often in situations where the skin was already compromised.

Translating that to your daily skincare routine is a little more complicated.

I personally like copper peptides and use them in my own routine.

They can help with skin firmness, texture, and overall barrier health.

They also require patience though.

You’re not going to wake up in two weeks with new collagen. This is more of a long game.

Most people react well to copper peptides, and I’m a fan. I also like other peptides though!

So are they worth it?

If you’re already consistent with the basics and you’re curious, sure.

If you’re expecting a dramatic transformation, maybe not, but you can try for yourself and see.

There’s no regulatory standard, no clinical threshold, no consistent meaning behind the label.

Clean is whatever a brand decides it is.

Still, it’s everywhere.

You’ll find “clean” on moisturizers, mascaras, and mouthwashes, sometimes with a list of banned ingredients, sometimes with a vague promise of being “better for you.”

And even though the language is murky, people are clearly responding to it.

It reflects a bigger shift: consumers want to know what they’re putting on and in their bodies.

So let’s talk about it.

Clean beauty isn’t always evidence-based, but that doesn’t mean the concept is worthless.

Wanting to reduce exposure, limit unnecessary ingredients, or avoid hormone disruptors isn’t wrong.

It just gets lost when the conversation is driven by marketing instead of science.

In this article, I’m breaking down where the clean beauty movement came from, what the science actually says about so-called “toxic” ingredients, and how I think about clean formulation in my own brand.

Because while the word itself might be vague, the goal (less harm, more transparency) is worth talking about.

Where “Clean Beauty” Actually Came From

The term “clean beauty” didn’t come from science.

It came from marketing.

It started gaining traction in the early 2000s as a response to concerns about parabens, sulfates, and synthetic preservatives.

These ingredients were flagged (sometimes with good reason, sometimes not) and “clean” became a catch-all term for products that left them out.

But there’s a problem.

There’s no universal definition for what clean actually means.

One brand might define it as “free from 1,000+ ingredients,” while another might focus on being plant-based or cruelty-free.

Retailers like Sephora or Ulta have their own internal “clean” standards, but even those are inconsistent and change often.

A lot of early clean beauty branding leaned heavily on the idea that natural is safer and synthetic is dangerous.

That binary doesn’t hold up under scrutiny.

Arsenic is natural. So is poison ivy.

Plenty of synthetics are stable, effective, and well-studied (hello, nano hydroxyapatite!).

Plenty of natural ingredients can be irritating or contaminated.

The issue isn’t that consumers wanted safer options. The issue is that the conversation was built on fear instead of facts.

When fear drives the narrative, nuance gets lost. And as my longtime readers know, I’m all about nuance.

The Science Behind “Toxins” in Beauty

Let’s start with the obvious: everything is a chemical.

Water is a chemical. Oxygen is a chemical.

The word “toxin” gets thrown around in beauty marketing like it means something specific, but it doesn’t always.

What actually matters is the dose, the delivery system, and how your body processes the ingredient.

Take parabens, for example.

They’ve been demonized for years, mostly due to some flawed studies and a lot of bad headlines.

In reality, parabens are some of the most studied and well-tolerated preservatives we have.

They’re effective at very low concentrations, which makes them ideal for preventing microbial growth without sensitizing the skin.

In fact, many so-called “clean” products that avoid parabens end up using alternatives that can be more irritating or less stable.

And yet, I can also understand endocrine disruption concerns around parabens, and I would never fault someone for wanting to reduce their exposure to parabens.

Fragrance is another ingredient that’s constantly labeled as “toxic.”

And yes, fragrance can be a problem for people with sensitive skin or conditions like rosacea.

But again, the risk depends on how much is used, how often it’s applied, and the context. It’s not a yes-or-no question.

That said, this doesn’t mean anything goes. Harm reduction matters.

Ingredient transparency matters.

Some ingredients do have questionable safety profiles when used chronically or in large amounts, especially in products applied daily.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals, microplastics, and persistent environmental pollutants are real concerns, even if the individual risk from a single product is low.

This is where a more nuanced approach matters.

You don’t need to fear every long ingredient name on a label.

But you should be paying attention to what you’re using regularly, and what your skin actually needs.

Why the Clean Label Still Matters to People

The word “clean” might be vague, but the reason it took off isn’t hard to understand.

Most people aren’t cosmetic chemists.

They don’t have the time or background to decode ingredient lists or read through toxicology data.

So when a product is labeled as clean, it feels like a shortcut.

Something that signals safety, simplicity, and less risk.

And who can blame people for wanting to feel safer? I certainly can’t.

Even if the term is unregulated, it taps into a real concern. People are paying more attention to what they put on their skin and into their bodies.

They’re reading labels.

They’re googling ingredients.

They’re asking better questions.

Like most things in skincare, the truth is less dramatic and more nuanced.

You can be aware of what it’s doing without spiraling into fear about screen time or daylight.

In this article, I’ll break down where blue light comes from, what it does (and doesn’t) do to your skin, and how I personally approach it.

I don’t live in fear of the sun or my monitor.

But I do think there are smart ways to protect your skin without giving up your entire lifestyle in the process.

What exactly is blue light, and where is it coming from?

Let’s get one thing straight.

Blue light isn’t new, and your phone didn’t invent it. It’s part of the visible light spectrum, sitting between about 400 and 500 nanometers. It’s often called high-energy visible (HEV) light.

That just means it has more energy than the rest of visible light, but it’s nowhere near the strength of ultraviolet.

Most of the blue light you’re exposed to doesn’t come from screens. It comes from the sun.

That’s always been true.

But because we now spend so much time staring at artificial sources like LED bulbs and monitors, the conversation has shifted indoors where you’re not getting the protective benefits of broad-spectrum sunlight.

I use the DMinder app to track my vitamin D production, and I aim for somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 IU a day depending on the season and where I am.

I also get regular bloodwork, so I’m not guessing.

If I need to supplement, I do, but it’s not my choice because I don’t find D3 supplements to be particularly effective (yes, even with K2).

I’m careful about burning, but I don’t slather sunscreen on my entire body every time I step outside.

Rushing through your routine and piling products on top of each other right away?

That's probably why they're pilling (those annoying little balls that form on your skin).

Let each layer settle for a few seconds before adding the next one.

Mixing the Wrong Ingredients

Same goes for mixing tretinoin with harsh exfoliants - your skin won't thank you for that combo.
