If you’re acne-prone, you’re already familiar with how bad airplanes can make you break out.

Do yourself a favor and get a BHA serum or toner if you’re prone to breakouts.

Salicylic acid will help keep your pores clear, and the idea is that hopefully, we’ll prevent any breakouts from forming in the first place instead of treating them after they occur.

A good BHA product will also have hydrating and antioxidant ingredients so you don’t have to use a thousand different products.

5. Fast Instead of Indulging in Junk

I wish someone would have told me this years ago, travel doesn’t make you hungry, it makes you dehydrated.

Which screws up your hunger signals and makes you eat the junk at the airport that’s packed with acne triggers.

Sugar, tons of fried foods, alcohol, etc.

Do yourself a favor, if you can’t pack your own food, just fast when you’re traveling until you get to your destination.

You can load up on water with magnesium and sea salt instead until you get somewhere you can make good food choices.

It’ll keep you healthy, prevent any digestion issues, and keep your skin clear too.

6. Prepare for Beauty Sleep

Do yourself a favor and pack a sleeping mask, earplanes, and mouth tape.

This is my secret to finally being able to sleep on planes without being afraid of snoring.

Aaand I’m technically counting it as a skincare tip because proper sleep will help more with dark circles than any eye cream.

Although this is the eye cream I’m using if you’re looking for one.

Here are the 5 biggest things I wish someone had told me before I started using it.

1. Winter is the best time to start

Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight, which means you can burn easier.

Starting in the summer is rough because you’re outside more.

Winter is safer since you’re not in the sun as much, but you still need sunscreen every day.

Try: Daily Dose Hydra-Ceramide Boost: A colorless, hydrating serum with ceramides and SPF 40.

2. Retinol isn’t the only option

There are different forms of vitamin A products, and each one works a little differently:

• Adapalene: more for acne, not really an anti-aging product (although I think we’ll see more evidence coming out in the future), but you can buy it at the drugstore.

  Try: Differin Gel (Adapalene 0.1%): One of the best over-the-counter retinoids for long-term acne control. Just go slow if you’re new to it, it can be strong.

• Tretinoin: prescription only, and much stronger than retinol. If you’re interested in trying it, you can also get it through online pharmacies like UluRx.

• Retinal: stronger than retinol but not as harsh as tretinoin. A good in-between option.

Retinol works well on its own, but it’s even better when you mix it with the right things.

Together, moisturizer and face oils are an essential part of a skin care routine for dry skin.

There are many different types of face oils, including:

• Grapeseed oil

All of these face oils provide nourishment to your skin’s natural moisture barrier.

Concern with Face Oils

Some oils, such as lavender oil, have antibacterial properties which can be good for people with acne.

However, they can also be irritating to the skin, so applying facial oil product with essential oil is not suitable for everyone.

Also, olive oil can exacerbate a yeast called Malasezzia.

Therefore, it is not suitable for people with fungal acne or dandruff.

Hair Oils

Certain oils are heavier and can be comedogenic.

For example, many oil blends formulated with argan oil can clog pores.

Coconut oil is also not suitable for acne prone skin.

Your best bet for these oils is to use them for your hair instead of your face.

Additionally, some people like to dilute rosemary extract in a carrier oil such as castor to promote hair growth.

The Difference Between Moisturizers and Facial oils

There are a few key differences between moisturizers and facial oils in skin care:

Also, moisturizers tend to be more cost effective than facial oils from a price perspective.

Overall, they both have many benefits for anti aging, and they both have a place in your skincare routine to nourish your protective barrier with fatty acids.

However, you should not replace moisturizer with face oil.

Instead, consider layering oil on top of moisturizer!

Face Oil vs. Moisturizer

Both face oil and traditional moisturizer are great products to use in your skin care routine, but they serve different purposes.

The biggest difference is that moisturizers contain water and use humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin to treat dehydrated skin.

On the other hand, face oils do not contain water and are mainly used to seal off your skin to prevent transepidermal water loss.

Get it, because oil and water don’t mix?

That being said, face oil and moisturizer both contain ingredients to nourish your skin barrier and soothe irritated skin like fatty acids and anti-oxidants.

Plus, they can both be used to deliver active ingredients like salicylic acid or retinol to treat excess oil or aging skin.

So, face oil before or after moisturizer?

You should always apply your face oil after moisturizing first.

Typically, your skincare routine order should go from “thinnest to thickest” or “wateriest to oiliest”, with the exception of your main treatment – whether that be retinol, an acne treatment, or something else.

After washing your face, the order should look something like this:

1. Main treatment (ex. retinol)

2. Hydrating serum

3. Eye cream

4. Moisturizer

That being said, everyone is different. If you prefer including a face oil after your moisturizer, go for it.

I prefer to keep physical exfoliators for my body, not my face though.

Even more gentle brightening ingredients like kojic acid should be used a few times per week at most.

I’ll also show you how to structure a nighttime skin care routine for all skin types.

Morning vs. Night Skincare Routine

One aspect of skincare that many people overlook is the difference between a morning skincare routine and a night skin care routine.

Morning Skin Care Routine

The primary focus of your morning skincare routine should be protection.

This means using products with antioxidant ingredients like vitamin C and applying sunscreen.

This will protect your skin from free radicals from UV rays and sun exposure.

Nighttime Skin Care Routine

In contrast, the primary focus of your daily night skin care routine is to let your actives work overnight.

This is when you can use ingredients like exfoliants and retinoids.

Applying them overnight will allow you to wake up with healthy skin.

Morning vs. Nighttime Skincare

Overall, the vast majority of facial skincare should be done in the evening before bed.

Morning products should be limited to just a few.

This also gives you some leeway in case you’re rushing to get to work in the morning.

Plus, you’ll be cleansing away all the makeup, sweat, dirt, oil, and other substances that accumulate on your face throughout the day.

So, without *much further ado, let’s dive into a night skin care routine for glowing skin!

I. Cleansers

The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing.

I typically suggest cleansing with lukewarm or cold water as hot water can dry you out.

There are several types of cleansers to choose from, including:

You can include either of these with the cleansers listed above in a process called double cleansing.

If you’re dealing with breakouts, clogged pores, or skin that just looks a little blah, this might be the cleanser for you.

II. Toners

After cleansing, the next step in your nighttime skincare routine is toning.

To be fair, toners may not be a necessary step for everyone.

However, they can be a great addition to your skincare routine if you’re looking to boost hydration and protect your skin barrier.

Benefits of Toners

Essentially, toners help to balance the pH of your skin and prepare it for the next steps in your skincare routine.

They can also help to remove any remaining impurities or traces of makeup that your cleanser may have missed.

How to Use Toners

You can also pour a small amount into your palms and pat it into your skin if you prefer.

The latter is what I do!

How to Use Retinoids

To use these skin care products in your night skin care routine, apply a pea-sized amount to your your face and neck after your cleanser and/or toner.

Gently massage it in until absorbed.

If you’re new, make sure to start with a low-strength retinoid and gradually increase the strength as your skin becomes accustomed to it.

You may also want to start by using a retinoid only 2-3 times per week and gradually increase the frequency as your skin becomes more tolerant.

Be warned that you may experience flaky skin as your initially adjust to it!

Some people may not be able to tolerate retinoids at all in their nighttime skincare routine.

In that case, I suggest you consider exfoliants instead!

IV. Exfoliants

Exfoliating your skin is an important step in any skincare routine, as it helps to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores.

There are several types of exfoliants to choose from, including:

• AHAs

• BHAs

• Polyhydroxy acids (PHAs)

AHAs

Similar to hyaluronic acid, they can bind to water which may give you a hydration boost!

They’re also good for evening out skin tone by getting rid of dark spots.

BHAs

These are oil-soluble exfoliants that work by breaking down the build-up of oil and dead skin cells in the pores.
